East Waikiki Primary School promotes a culture of literacy that provides opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge with a large range of texts to choose from.
Our wonderful Library provides curriculum-based resources and materials for staff and students that are available in a variety of different formats. From Year 3 onwards our students use the Literacy Pro Reading and Comprehension Program. Students are tested once per term to acquire a Lexile score, using this score they can then choose books that are best suited to their reading abilities and comprehension levels.
We strive to create a welcoming and user-friendly environment that is an oasis within the school. At lunchtime, the Library becomes a Chill Out Zone for students to engage in a fun and relaxed time with their friends, playing board games, drawing or reading.
Our Library also coordinates our school’s Book Week Celebrations, annual Scholastic Book Fair, National Simultaneous Story Time Program and Book Club.
If you would like to help during our annual Book Week and our Book Fair, please contact me at school. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Scholastic Learning Zone – Literacy Pro
At East Waikiki Primary we use Literacy Pro (LP) for our year 3 – 6 students.
It is an easy-to-use program which allows your child to do a comprehension test to measure his or her reading ability according to a scale called the LEXILE measure.
Your child takes the LitPro Test, and then is assigned a “score”. The LitPro Tests are done at school and cannot be accessed before or after school hours.
This score helps your child to find the books which are best for him or her to read – something challenging but not too difficult, and not too easy either!
Literacy Pro is also a wonderful source of quizzes – over 70,000 of them – your child can read a book from the school library and then take the quiz for that book. These scores are recorded so you can see how well your child understands what he or she is reading. If the scores are consistently low, then perhaps the books are too difficult. You simply find easier books. And vice versa.
Literacy Pro Library (LPL) is a “library” or collection of over 900 e-books – these are all levelled, so that your child’s teacher can assign a book, or books, for your child to read. Our school subscribes to Literacy Pro so after your child has read that book, they can immediately take the quiz for that book.
How to do a search for a Lexile Quiz at home.
On your home computer or device search for Scholastic Learning Zone. (Google chrome or Firefox are the better search engines to use, unblocking pop-ups may help also.)
1. First choose our country from the drop-down list.
2. Then enter our organisation ID: H7GW (use capitals for this).
3. Enter student Username and Password, these are all lower case.
E.g., Username: john.1 (child’s first name-dot-number) and
Everyone’s password: ewps2014 then click enter.
4. In the My Zone box click on the Literacy Pro icon, not Literacy Pro Library.
5. Another new window will open. Click on Search.
6. Yet another new window will open. In the search box you can search by either title or author.
7. When you have found the correct title click on take quiz. The quiz is 10 multiple choice questions.
To pass the quiz you need to get a minimum of 70%. If they do not pass the quiz, they will have to wait 24 hours before attempting it again.
eBook’s can be accessed through the Literacy Pro Library icon in the My Zone box. Select the books assigned by your child’s teacher, if there is nothing assigned choose a book from within their lexile range (50 point down or 100 points up from their score). To find books click on the Books icon in the middle near the top of the page. To the left of that screen you can choose their range and a selection of books will appear.
Quizzes that are attempted from below their score will be deleted by your child’s teacher.
*Our students are encouraged to change their books regularly; they do not have to wait for their library day. They can change their books before or after school Monday -Thursday.
The Library iPads are available to do LitPro quizzes during library open times. Students are encouraged to borrow in their class borrowing times as well as open times. The Library is open Monday to Thursday during school times including before and after school.
